Hawaiian Fun Jazzie (1990)

As the saying goes - the further into the forest, the more trees. I don't remember anymore what I was looking for on the internet that this search led me to this doll. I really didn't know it existed at all, but it's no wonder, since in the European catalogs, the only teenager in the Barbie family that I remember well is Skipper. And here you are, surprise!

Hawaiian Fun Jazzie doll

Jazzie's face is unlike any of the well-known Barbie dolls, though not entirely. It turns out, that my cousin had a doll with this mold, it was a mum from the Heart Family. Maybe that's why I managed to get to Jazzie - I'm not able to say right now.

But it wasn't Jazzie who owned this face first. It all started with a series of Starr dolls - yes, I wasn't mistaken, there are two "r" letters in the name. Starr made its debut in the early 1980s - it was a line of dolls that didn't connect with the Barbie in any way. It was Mattel's creation aimed at teenagers - Starr attended high school and was an exemplary student. She had two female friends and, of course, a boyfriend. One of her friends was Kelley - and it was her face that Jazzie had taken over, though not so straight away. The Starr line, as I was able to determine, was released to the US market and lasted only one year. America went crazy about it, and Mattel canceled the series - something like better series these days. They did so probably because of Starr's lack of a relationship with Barbie and popularity that could threaten Barbie.

After Kelley, her mold was taken over by mum from Heart Family - these dolls had no names - mum, daughter, dad, son, grandfather, grandmother. So in 1985, the first Heart Family mother with the Kelley mold came out, and in 1989 Jazzie appeared.

And again in short - it was like a copy of the Starr series, except this time it was announced that Jazzie belonged to the Barbie family - she was her cousin. Jazzie had a boyfriend named Dude and two friends, Stacie and Chelsey. The first Jazzie appeared in 1989 - as I have already mentioned, and the last one in 1993.

Out of curiosity, I entered the name Jazzie into the search engine and it turned out that there were currently two for sale in my range. At the moment when I decided to buy one - there was only one left. And so a few days after I found out about the existence of Jazzie - she came to me.

The Jazzie that came to me comes from 1990 from the Hawaiian Fun line. I remember well this line from my childhood, my friend had Barbie Hawaiian Fun. The dolls had Hawaiian hulu skirts and a bracelet with a fragrant pendant attached to them.

In the box she looked like in the pictures I found on the web (below). I don't know where the difference comes from, but I found pictures of boxes with an orange and blue background behind the doll. After a deeper search, it turned out that Mattel was making such things with packages, I also found info about Barbie Gymnast (which I will mention in a moment) in various boxes.

My Jazzie came to me in a 1993 Barbie Gymnast outfit, or more precisely, in this doll's bodysuit.

The bodysuit has a few little holes though, so it's not in the best condition. The announcement said Jazzie had white lines on her cheeks.

Jazzie Hawaiian Fun is a beach doll, so her body is a different shade than standard dolls - she is tanned. Which made it very difficult for me to work with the photos, Cali Girl are also tanned, but they are more photogenic.
How can you not succumb to the charm of such a cute face?

Jazzie

In the photo above you can see the letters "Z" in Jazzie's eyes - all dolls in this line had such eyes. I don't really know if it is the letter "Z" or maybe some zigzag and what it really symbolizes. However, I have always been fascinated by such flavors, still my ideal doll from childhood is the Barbie Superstar, who had stars in her eyes.

Turning back to my Jazzie - this is how she looked at the back:

It's time to undress my miss. Sorry for the photos without clothes, but this is the only way you can see that her body is different from Barbie and how it differs.

Jazzie

Where the classic Barbie has a waist connection that allows it to rotate, Jazzie has this connection built in that way so she can not only turn, but also bend.

Jazzie

Jazzie also has spherical hip joints, which will surely come in handy if she wants to ride horses. Her arms are bent at the elbows - like the "better" Barbie models from my childhood - the shoulder joints are the same as those of a Barbie with this type of hands.

In addition to the stains on her face, she also had stains on her legs.

What else caught my attention were the "panties". In those days, dolls did not have such finished bottoms. Yes, there were some that had this part of the body painted white, there was also a doll from the My First Barbie line, which even had white legs, but there were no panties carved with flowers.

Enough posing, Jazzie demanded a proper bath.

Happy Jazzie after bathing and combing

From my dolls wardrobe, I chose a MTM blouse for her and a skirt that came to me with Selena - I know that I did not post about my girls from HSM, I will do it soon, Jazzie is a larger collector's item than Disney dolls. Dad's blue slippers, they literally look like men's slippers, are branded with the name Skipper on the sole and they butt fit Jazzie to prevent her from posing barefoot. And I also borrowed them from my little girls.

Skipper feet are smaller than Jazzie. My Jazzie must have been as much a favorite toy as my Barbie Bathtime Fun - I can tell from her hair, which at first didn't look as tragic as it actually turned out to be. When I tried to detangle them, despite soaking them solidly in fabric conditioner, they resisted and broke under the comb or brush. Of course, I tried to do it gently, but nothing helped. Fortunately, many of them did not fall out, I will not even call it a fluff, but you can see that they are shaded, here and there single broken fibers stick out here and there - also I will try to touch them as little as possible in the future - I hope it will work out.
In my resources, I managed to find colorful rubber bands to recreate her original hairstyle - two double braids. Their braiding immediately reminded me of Sunny. I was afraid that they would develop, but to my surprise, they even held without rubber bands

Jazzie

I forgot to mention that Jazzie's knees bend with the classic "click".

Since her hair reminds me of my Bathtime Fun Barbie, I decided to shoot them together, for comparison how Jazzie looks with a grown up Barbie. In addition, Bathtime Fun also has her arms bent at the elbows. What in this comparison is unlikely to be seen, due to her clothes - the size of her bust - Jazzie is not yet 100% female, although she is overgrown.

In fact, Jazzie is really tall. As we well know - the classic Barbie stands on tiptoe while Jazzie is standing on full feet.

And one more time together

You can see the difference in skin tone as well, Bathtime looks like an anemic by Jazzie

And a few more photos of Jazzie herself.

UPDATE
May 20, 2022

Jazzie got new clothes and shoes!

What I found out is that this shirt is from Fashion Fever Pack from 2005. I don't know the origin of the eco leather pink pants.

She got sport shoes that allowes her to stand on her own.

She got also a sweet skirt. She looks great in this outfit! But I don't know the origin of this bottom.
